mammoplasty is performed to lift the breast tissue, and areolas are positioned
to regain a good visual result. Silicone implants may be used to fill decreased

On the flip side, if the breast gland is too large, breast reduction is performed. The breast tissue is decreased and modelled to the desired shape. Age limit for this type of surgery varies and each case needs to be addressed individually. Periareolar mammoplasty (Benelli) means that a ring of skin is removed from around the areola and therefore the scar is limited around the areola, i.e. quite hidden and usually invisible in time. The disadvantage is that there may be less change made to the breast’s shape. This kind of mammoplasty is therefore often combined with breast enlargement.
Formal mammoplasty means that excess skin is cut out and nipples are moved up. Incisions are made around the nipple and extend to the underside of the breast forming a shape of inverted T. This traditional technique is widely used because it consistently produces a great shape and position of the breast on the chest wall. In this technique, excess skin is removed, the breast is elevated and frequently, the size of the areola is reduced. This approach allows maximal change to the breast.
What To Expect After Surgery
After the operation, you will have drains inserted to prevent post operative fluid build up. In addition, the bandages are usually quite restricting. This is necessary to help keep the swelling in cheek. After 36 hours, drains are removed. After 1 week, you will be fitted with sports bra. No underwire’s can be used for 6 weeks. The surgeon may or may not suggest massaging; it depends on the kind of operation performed. Lifting of a heavy load or the arms above the head should be avoided in the first weeks. Within 6-8 weeks, physical fitness regime may be resumed gradually.
The Risks of Breast Reduction
Generally, there are risks associated with surgery and general anaesthetics (i.e. bleeding, infection, nerve damage, unexpected drug reaction, etc.). Specifically, the surgery leaves permanent scars (although they can be, to a certain extend, hidden quite well). Occationally, the surgery may cause assymetrical appearance of the breasts.

Tips and Traps of Breast Reduction
- You will have scars. If you are unwilling to accept scars, you should not have this operation. Since each individual heals differently, predicting a scenario or result is difficult.
- Anticipate recurrent droop if your breasts are large. The larger your breasts, the more droop you can expect, and sooner as well.
- Try to stop smoking for 2-4 weeks before surgery to reduce the risk of healing problems.
