Chin Augmentation - Sliding Genioplasty is
the operation aimed to enhance the size of the chin and restore facial balance
and harmony in relationship to the nose. A larger chin can be created by surgery
which elongates the lower jaw.
Incision is made inside the mouth where gum and lower lip meet, ie without visible scar. Mandibular Osteotomy - A horizontal cut (osteotomy) is made through the jaw bone (mandible). The lower portion of the separated bone is moved forward to the desired position and fixed with titanium plates (titanium doesn’t set off metal detectors in airports etc).
The incision is closed with sutures and an external pressure
dressing is applied. You should be aware that you will feel an abrupt "shelf" of
sorts both underneath the jaw and in the anterior part of the new "chin" - where
it was slid forward. However, tissue will cover your new chin and look very
natural.
As with all elective surgeries, good health and realistic expectations are prerequisites.
Another possibility for improvement through chin surgery is submental liposuction in which excess fatty tissue is removed to redefine the chin or neckline. When there is a contributing problem of dental malocclusions or birth defects in the structure of the jaw itself, surgery of the jaw can improve the form and function of the lower face and greatly enhance appearance. Your pre-op pictures (front and side view) are therefore of the most importance and can help to decide on the type of surgery that addresses your concerns. The surgeon can also provide information on new medical techniques for chin surgery and offer recommendations for supplementary surgery that can ensure the greatest improvement. Expectations of looking and feeling better after surgery should be discussed with the surgeon before the surgery, keeping in mind that the desired result is improvement, not perfection.
The best candidates for chin augmentation are patients with weak or receding chins (microgenia), but with a normal dental bite.
Normally, you will need to stay at the clinic for two days. Upon your discharge you will be recovering in our private apartment for the next 4 days before flying back.
Immediately after the operation your face will be swollen and feel tight, your jaws will be stiff and you will find that you cannot open your mouth widely. Your throat may also be uncomfortable and swallowing can be difficult to begin with.
Perhaps surprisingly it is not a particularly painful operation but it is still likely to be sore and regular painkillers will be arranged for you. The discomfort is usually worse for the first few days.
The swelling can be reduced by using cold compresses and sleeping propped upright for a few days. The swelling should be gone within 2 - 6 weeks and the final result will be evident in 6 weeks.
Light activity can resume the same day as surgery. Return to work and usual activity is allowed within 7 to 10 days after the chin augmentation surgery. Within a week of surgery, the external dressing is usually removed.
Every operation has its risks. Bruising and swelling of the chin are the most common complications. Infection and blood clots are rare. Nerve damage leading to numbness of the chin area and lower lip occurs in about 1 in 100 patients and doesn’t last long. After surgery, there may be a strange feeling around the chin. Feeling hard to talk, smile or eat is normal for few days. There is some discomfort and soreness, which is easily controlled by painkilling medication. A liquid diet may be advised for a day or two.
Smoking can delay healing.
