Gastric Sleeve Resection with Prague Beauty

Gastric Sleeve Resection

Gastric Sleeve Resection, also known as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), is an exciting weight loss surgery option that combines many of the advantages of both laparoscopic gastric bypass and the gastric band.

Other names for Gastric Sleeve Resection are: Sleeve Gastrectomy, Greater Curvature Gastrectomy, Parietal Gastrectomy, Gastric Reduction, Logitudinal Sleeve Gastrectomy or Gastric Tube procedure.

It involves removing of the lateral 2/3rds of the stomach with a stapling device. It is done laparoscopically and it is not reversible. It basically leaves a stomach tube instead of a stomach sack. The residual stomach capacity is about 100 mls. Moreover, removal of lateral part of stomach removes also the source of a hormone of hunger (ghrelin). This operation is generally perfectly tolerated.

During the past decade, the use of sleeve gastrectomy has gained popularity, and it has become widely accepted as a primary bariatric operation, as well as a first-stage operation for high-risk patients.

Obese class II, i.e. BMI of 35 and higher. Age between 18 and 65 years.

Gastric Sleeve Resection

The operation is performed laparoscopically under general anaesthetic. A small incision (less than 1/2 inch, 1 cm) is made near the belly button. Carbon dioxide (a gas that occurs naturally in the body) is introduced into the abdomen to create a work space for the surgeon. Then a small laparoscopic camera is placed through the incision into the abdomen. The camera sends a picture of the stomach and abdominal cavity to a video monitor. It gives the surgeon a good view of the key structures in the abdominal cavity. A few additional, small incisions are made in the abdomen. The surgeon watches the video monitor and works through these small incisions using instruments with long handles to complete the procedure.

Then the surgeon removes approximately 60 to 80% of the stomach along the greater curvature, leaving only a small tube. The cutaway part of the stomach is removed from the body, therefore the stomach reduction is permanent and the gastric sleeve procedure is not reversible. Overall, it is a less complicated operation than either gastric bypass or duodenal switch surgery.

Gastric Sleeve Resection is usually not recommended for people with any of the following:

  • If the surgery or treatment represents an unreasonable risk to the patient
  • Inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract such as ulcers, oesophagitis or Crohn’s disease
  • Gastric or eosophageal varices
  • Hiatus hernia
  • Severe cardiopulmonary diseases or other conditions which may make them poor surgical candidates in general
  • Dependency on alcohol or drugs
  • People with severe learning or cognitive disabilities or emotionally unstable people

  • Nausea
  • vomiting
  • pain
  • cramps
  • diarrhea
  • constipation

As with any major surgery, sleeve gastrectomy poses potential health risks or unforeseen, unknown or adverse reactions, both in the short-term and long-term.

Risks associated with the sleeve gastrectomy can include:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • The need to convert to an open procedure
  • Perforation
  • Injury to another organ
  • Infection
  • Adverse reactions to anaesthesia
  • Blood clots
  • Lung or breathing problems
  • Leaks from staple line used to resect the stomach

Longer-term risks and complications of sleeve gastrectomy surgery can include:

  • Gastrointestinal obstruction
  • Hernias
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
  • Stomach kinking
  • Strictures
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Malnutrition
  • Vomiting
  • Vitamin deficiency and their consequences

Very rarely, complications of sleeve gastrectomy can be fatal.

Please contact your physician or our Hot Line +420 602 166 757 immediately if you have any concern regarding possible complications.

It is highly recommended to patients after bariatric surgery to arrange a blood test four times a year to early discover any vitamin deficiency.

Both groups, i.e. sleeve or bypass patients, please take particular attention to Thiamine (vitamin B1) as such deficiency could occur in up to 49% of patients as a result of bypass of the jejunum, where it is primarily absorbed, or in the presence of impaired nutritional intake from persistent, severe vomiting.

The early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are nausea and constipation, but it could worsen up and lead to neurological and psychiatric complications known as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Proper supplementation is therefore essential to stay on the safe side.
